Country Opal is located in Spencer Idaho, known as the
Opal Capital of America. Spencer Idaho Opal
is known the world over for it's play of fire and
colour.
Our opal is surface
mined in a pit and although heavy equipment can be seen
at the mines, it is used only
to expose the larger veins of opal for the more
time consuming and tedious task of "hard rock
mining" the
actual opal from the bedrock. Most of the opal is
knocked out by hand with a rock hammer and a chisel,
thus the expression "hard rock mining".
Because of the
delicate nature and make up of opal, often natural
bedrock is left attached to the opal as it
is transported from the mine to be worked by hand
into the finished stones and then mounted in gold and
silver jewelry.
High Country Opal is one of a handful left who
still works each stone by hand in house to ensure the
highest quality in each and every opal. Each piece
is cut, worked, and mounted in house. For this reason
